Could Sun-Avoidance be the Missing Link Explaining Rampant Autism?

With autism soaring in America, increasing at a rate of more than 20 percent per year, the need for answers is both vital and urgent. Mercury in early childhood vaccines has been pointed out as one main culprit. An additional theory that makes a whole lot of sense is the link between rampant vitamin D deficiency and the proportionate jump in autism.

The Vitamin D Council observes that sun-avoidance has increased in the last 20 years as the medical community started warning about the dangers of sun exposure. They believe there is a link. The vitamin D receptor appears in a wide variety of brain tissue early in the development of the baby, and activated vitamin D receptors increase nerve growth in the brain.

Just recently, the National Institutes of Mental Health concluded that it is vital that the mother get enough vitamin D while pregnant in order for the baby’s brain to develop properly. The child must also get enough vitamin D after birth for “normal” brain functioning. Moderate sun exposure would take care of these issues, as the sun is irreplaceable when it comes to the body’s ability to produce adequate amounts of vitamin D.

It may be just a theory right now, but it is a viable one. I’ve written about the radical benefits of sun exposure on many occasions. Although excessive tanning and burning is not wise, appropriate sun exposure is truly vital for your health. Daily exposure, for short amounts of time without using toxic sunscreens, may be just the thing to halt the epidemic spread of autism as well.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

The dangers of sun exposure have been greatly exaggerated, and the benefits highly underestimated. You are not nearly as likely to develop deadly skin cancer as you have been led to believe, and the benefits you will receive from normalizing your vitamin D levels are nearly endless. If you have any questions at all about the relationship about sun and skin cancer please be sure to visit my article on that topic.

Next year, my book on the topic, Dark Deception, will explain the full health benefits of vitamin D, and expose the dangerous lies you have been told about sun exposure.

From the day of birth an infant is exposed to either contaminated breast milk or synthetic powdered formula.  Then, they are bundled up in synthetic fibers and laid on a toxic mattress.  Before they are two weeks old they are injected with vaccines.  Let's not forget the plastic bottles that feed them their formula or pumped breast milk.  Oh and then we jam a plastic pacifier in their mouth before they are even able to smile.  Don't even think about letting precious newborn skin be exposed to sunlight!  Make sure you get those fluoride drops as soon as those little teeth appear....let's stop the insanity now!  I believe all of the above have something to do with rampant autism rates.

TheHealthyGlow, I completely agree.  This is why I truly believe that all of us who are advocates of natural health must be advocates of a healthy environment.  We have many choices of what not to take into our bodies, such as mercury fillings, fish, vaccines, MSG, and so on, but many environmental toxins get into our bodies no matter what we do to avoid them.  We must be good stewards of the earth, even if it is only for the selfish reason of protecting our health!

"In our every deliberation we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy

This means that we need to be considering the consequences of our choices not on our children, or our children's children, or even our great-grandchildren, but on our great-great-great-great-great grandchildren... at a statistical average of 25 years per generation (the current computation taking into effect the later childbearing of the current childbearing population), this means looking at what our choices will cost in 175 years! How many of us take the effort to actually -do- that? How many of us even thing beyond our own children and/or grandchildren, and think about the world we'll be leaving them to raise their children in? How many of us even -know- the impact of the choices we make on a daily basis, and if we -don't- know, is this an excuse to go ahead and do it, or should we put that convenience item aside, simply because we don't know what impact it is going to have over the long run?

The "Combating Autism Act of 2007" is spurring so many different theories that it is making my head spin. A lot of money is available for research into possible causes of autism... and this is a good thing. I am all for research as I believe there is more than one cause, and yes, I believe there MAY be a genetic predisposition to autism. We need to be able to identify who is at risk to environmental triggers.
I would not dispute the fact that a vitamin D deficiency could be a factor in some cases of ASD. However, I was afraid that the avenues of research would be led away from the mercury/vaccine connection, and that is exactly what is happening. We have "too much TV"..."old dads"... "cell phones" and "electrical currants" that are being fingered as possible culprits. I'm not saying that this is impossible. Go ahead and do studies...we need answers, but lets not overlook the obvious... environmental toxins: vaccines, food additives, contaminated air and water, chemical wastes, etc. Special interest groups fought hard to keep the CDC out of controlling where the research money goes. But somehow, most of it seems to be routed everywhere but the obvious.
Again, I would never dispute the Vitamin D connection, but not in my grandson's case. My daughter spent a lot of time in the sun during her pregnancies. My grandson is blond, blue eyed and fair skinned. He plays outside even in the winter. He always turns a little pink at the beginning of summer and gradually turns to a healthy tan. He uses a natural sunscreen only when he is in the sun for prolonged periods. If he is lacking vitamin D, it's because something is obstructing his ability to absorb it. But in HIS case, I am convinced that a flu shot was his toxic tipping point!

hello minnie-me,

thought i would bring this recent study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism to your attention:

best wishes!
