Major Confusion on How to Do Breast Checks

Many women remain confused about the right way to check their breasts for early signs of cancer. Experts say there is no evidence that rigorous monthly "self-examination" reduces breast cancer deaths and it can lead to unnecessary biopsies.

Two large studies looking at a total of more than 388,000 women found that death rates from breast cancer were the same among women who rigorously self-examined as those who did not, while there were almost twice the number of biopsy operations in the self-examination group.

According to some experts, the best way for a woman to check her breasts is not to follow a strict examination routine, but to get to know what is normal, and feel them regularly for signs of any changes.

"...unnecessary biopsies..."  from who's prospective
From the patient's- yes, unnecessary, costly, painful, and frankly burns out the adrenals.
From the physicians, drug companies-no.  It is completely necessary. (to pay for the mortgage payment of the 4000 sq foot house, the Mercedes, the trip to Europe, daily Starbucks, and lest we forget, our therapist.

If the lump is cancer, a biopsy also increases the chance of it spreading by puncturing the surface and allowing cancer cells to escape into the blood stream to be carried to other parts of the body.

Research has suggested there is a high likelihood that breast cancer can be caused by wearing bras. It is postulated that the pressure of the bra on the body prevents toxins escaping from the breast area and the resulting build up of toxins increases the chance of cancer developing.

I'm with you Aaltrude, I quite wearing unwire bras and went to all cotton bras. They are much more comfortable and provide a little support as opposed to wearing nothing at all. I also quite wearing anti-persperant. I've tried natural deodorants which don't do much of anything for me. I just go natural and wash my pits once or twice in the middle of the day to "freshen" up. Dr. Mercola says we should not have much odor at all if we are healthy but I guess I just have not gotten there yet.

There is no medical (only social and cultural) reason to wear a brassiere so I never wear one, but then I am blessed being big enough, but not too big.  I do have to be careful when walking through the frozen food section though.  :)  Too many men think just because a woman is free from such a contraption, that means they're free in other ways.  Not so!  Breasts were never meant to be in a fixed position all day, pulled up and pushed in.  I have also heard that wearing a brassiere actually causes breasts to sag more because they atrophy from lack of use.  I would suggest if anyone is large, to get a reduction and lift if they can (being too big can be hard on one's back), though I do believe most times, breasts are proportional to one's body, so if you lose weight everywhere else, you'll lose weight in the chest area as well.  That's why women who are tiny aren't supposed to be big up top, no matter how Hollywood portrays beauty.  Being proportional is far more natural, beautiful and flattering.
