U.S. Paying Through the Nose for Poor Quality Health Care

American medical care may be the most expensive in the world, and it is definitely not worth every penny. A recent study highlighted the stark contrast between what the United States spends on its health system and the quality of care it delivers.

The report shows that the United States spends more than twice as much on each person for health care as most other industrialized countries. But it has fallen to last place among those countries in preventing deaths through use of timely and effective medical care.

The findings are likely to provide supporting evidence for the notion that the nation’s health care system needs to be fixed.

When you cut out the government and insurance red tape, healthcare is 60-70% less. I pay cash if I ever need to see a doctor. The only doctor I see is a chiropractor that gives significant discounts for cash paying customers.

More government involvement will only make matters worse. This has been proven in countries with "free" sick care.

Yeah? Well, I'm paying for no health care. (since I never get sick enough to go to the doctor) The highest-deductible insurance policy I can find still costs me $2,000 a year.

"Swami, I don't know the answer to your question and I admit that the choice to pay is mine. But I am currently paying for six insurance policies (only half of which are optional) that I never use. Are you saying I shouldn't mind?"

We don't necessarily have to be happy in any way about some of life's necessary evils. Whether you pay an insurance company or the government, you're still going to pay. Now I have a question for you: have you some sort of crystal ball that tells you you won't suffer an accident tomorrow?

My policy, which is for 'in case of disaster only', has a $5k deductible. I've carried it for years, but the irony is that some of the disasters I had in mind initially would not even be covered as I would pursue alternative therapies. But my policy has also proven useless for more conventional fare: I see an endocrinologist who refuses to take insurance, it is strictly cash (& office visits require a plane ride).

I also have a disability policy; that one is expensive, but will be glad if it remains unused.

1. Do you think you'd pay less with a socialized system?
2. Insurance guards against POTENTIAL need. I have fire insurance on my home, but I'm not angry that I haven't gotten my money's worth.
