Understanding the Legal Loopholes to Get Out of Your Cell Phone Contract TODAY!

You may recall a popular article I posted last year that explained how to make your cellular phone carrier drop you by forcing them to lose money, a process that might take, unfortunately, at least three months.

With AT&T preparing to "de-brand" their Cingular Wireless service Monday and the announcement of the iPhone earlier this week, you may want to think a little harder about getting out your existing Cingular contract.

This interesting piece from The Consumerist explains how to get out of your contract, and without paying a cancellation fee. The article features a detailed "script" actually used by a Cingular customer to cancel his agreement after eight years. (This method can also be used to switch your contract to a month-to-month agreement.)

Like the earlier protocol, you will spend some serious time on the phone, but, at least, it won't take at least three months and it will work.

Among the many reasons you might want to cancel your contract with the Telcos is electrosensitivity (ES), a much scoffed at condition which typically affects about 5% of the population (see www.emfacts.com/weblog/index.php?=435 or www.mast-victims.org or www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2458/6/267 ). The most famous, well documented case so far has been that of Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, who until about three years ago was the Director General of the WHO. I don’t think her story ever reached the media in America. In Japan it only rated a small mention in the back pages of certain newspapers. (See http://www.buergewelle.de/pdf/dr_brundtlands_story_17_9_02.htm for her story or http://omega.twoday.net.stories/460078 for comprehensive descriptions by sufferers, including Dr. Brundtland.) Don’t underestimate the power of the vested interests! Her subordinate, Dr. Michael Repacholi recently left ICNIRP (the body responsible for establishing international standards) and now works directly for the affected industries as a consultant. He has admitted that the WHO only provided the secretariat for his industry-oriented workshops. Non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF), which encompass extremely low frequency fields (power lines), fields from electrical appliances, radio waves, microwaves and infrared through visible light, have been traditionally considered too weak to cause effects; however, there is research dating back 80 years which demonstrates effects. There appears to be a spectrum of susceptibility, with a lot of research demonstrating effects on 70% of people (see Kositsky et al. www.salzburg.gv.at/bf/2001_kositsky_et_al._–ussr review-2.pdf ), which means about 30% are unaffected or little affected. Depending on the general degree of awareness, 15% may be subjectively aware of symptoms, and this is likely to increase as sources of EMF increase. Critics continue to say effects are impossible because the mechanism has yet to be elucidated—and then researchers who try to look into it lose their funding. It is thought that nitrosative stress may be involved (see www.kpu-berlin.de/For_Neu_Kuklinski_3_en.html for a description of that). I am happy to note that Dr. Mercola and his staff recognize EMF as a source of physiological stress. I realize this is not a popular subject, but isn’t it time for us to stop ridiculing the victims (and I guess start attacking them, so that we can finally reach “Stage 3: Accepted as a fact” on this)? Electrosensitivity typically develops thus: you get sick repeatedly. There may be some connection to places, but you ascribe it to allergens, germs, way of sitting, etc. Then you notice it occurring in proximity to certain equipment. Somewhere along the way, you get motivated to look into health, and you eventually stumble across an article on it. The realization hits like a ton of bricks. You take steps to reduce your exposure, and you get immediate, dramatic relief whereas nothing else worked. In Dr. Brundtland’s words, “There is no doubt.” It can be triggered by excessive exposure to EMF, chemicals or ionizing radiation. Gulf War Syndrome shows many similarities. The most recent additions to the ranks of the severely ES are understandably angry that no one warned them. It is not like no one has been trying! The reality is we have been silenced. (Speaking of conspiracies! I should write a book called “The Anatomy of Conspiracy.” I am a part of it—I am too often too scared to speak up!) I thank Dr. Mercola for providing this opportunity to reach out.

Ah, see that is the thing with life. As a society we are so programmed to believe that a contract means being locked in, imprisoned, etc. There are always ways out of everything. The bottom line is that it comes down to understanding life, not following life!

Responding to Sheila, wow! I never noticed that disclaimer! (Well, I don't have a cell phone.) But there was some talk a while back about insurers refusing to insure the telcos because of too many potential problems. A big risk for them. I'd say, use it with caution. And also support people's right to use alternative forms of communication.

Isn't there also small print on your cell phone contract that prohibits you from suing them for health risks associated with your cell phone?
