Using Antibacterial Soap May Disrupt Your Hormones

Up to now, triclosan received much of its deserved notoriety as an ingredient found in many toothpastes and soaps that creates antibiotic-resistant germs. That is, until a new study that identified triclosan as a synthetic endocrine disruptor.

Due to its presence at detectable levels in U.S. streams, scientists studied the effect of triclosan on young bullfrog tadpoles that hadn't matured long enough to produce thyroid hormones that are structurally very similar to the antibacterial, antifungal agent.

Exposing tadpoles to triclosan alone wasn't the issue. The combination of triclosan and thyroid hormones, however, made the latter far more potent, creating a slew of problems, including reduced gene activity, significant weight loss, uncontrolled cellular growth and accelerated hind-limb development.

Even worse, it doesn't take much triclosan (0.15 parts per billion) to disrupt a hormone signaling system in frogs -- one that mirrors humans. That's why you should use plain soap and water to keep your hands clean and stay away from antibacterial soaps.

Triclosan is found in most antibacterial soaps. In conjunction with off-setting normal hormone levels, more research suggests it poses a threat to the liver! My new Amazon best-selling book, Cracking the Cancer Code, exposes this and much more!

Brand name cosmetics concerning Skin-care, Toothpastes, Soaps, Detergents, Shampoos, etc. are regularly produced with chemicals that have been heavily researched and found to be cancer causing! They also harm the skin by destroying its natural pH. Scrutinize every product label very carefully and don’t buy products with the following chemicals contained in them.

Propylene Glycol – main ingredient in anti-freeze and used in hydraulic fluids.

Diethanolamine (DEA) - used as a wetting agent in shampoos, lotions, creams and other cosmetics.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – used in shampoos, soaps, detergents, and toothpastes and other products that we expect to “foam-up.”

Hexachlorophene – used in soaps, deodorants, and cosmetics.

Parabens – used primarily in skin-care products. Recent evidence indicates that topical parabens have been detected in human breast tumors. This is of great concern as parabens have been shown to mimic the action of the female hormone estrogen, which can encourage the growth of human breast tumors.

Any synthetic chemical at all. If you can’t pronounce it, stay away!

Dr. Mercola has made excellent contributions to Cracking the Cancer Code as well. I'm honored that several health experts have termed this book the most empowering, explosive book of the 21st century!

I agree.  And it's all becasue chemicals are cheap to make.  Mel, I had severe adult acne and have been using Nicole Miller cosmetics for 4 years.  I have before and after pictures and everytime my family and friends saw me during the transition phase they heaped compliments on my for my changing complexion.  I still have my hormonal days but it's about 80% better than what it was, plus, it has helped me to drink plenty of water and avoid sugar completely.

In response to Mel's comment, I think that your problem skin may be an internal issue that is showing itself on the surface.  I've read that acne is like an allergic reaction to the toxins in your body, and the body is trying to expel them through the skin.   According to Dr. Mercola, consumption of grains and sugars greatly contribute to problem skin, and if you limit your intake of these, you will see a great improvement.

Good luck and God Bless,

Teresa

I stay away from hand soaps with triclosan in them. However, I find it harder to choose cosmetics - especially for the face that are completely natural. I have acne prone/sensitive skin so I have to be careful what I use. I recently tried a product line called Carley's which is almost entirely natural and which claimed to be for those with my skin condition. However, it made my skin worse than it had ever been. After researching, I believe the problem was that the soap I was using was alkaline which disrupts the acid mantle of the skin providing a breeding ground for bacteria. A product line that I currently use is Jurlique and the ingredients are all natural. My skin does not break out with the products and hence my condition is not worsened, but I also don't see a ton of improvement. Another line that my esthetician introduced me to is Juvedical from Juvena. Juvena is a Swiss line that is not easy to find in Canada and the US but it is the only cosmetics that I have found to have made a noticeable difference in my skin - It smooths, hydrates, reduces redness and breakouts. It was actually designed initially for burn victims However, it is by no means natural. There is a long list of ingredients, much of which I can't pronounce.

The moral of my story is that natural is not always better and that sometimes chemicals have a better effect for certain skin conditions than all natural ingredients. I have faith in the Juvena products and would love you to look at the ingredient list for me but they dont post the ingredients on their website - only on their packaging. Well the skin is semi permeable so hopefully its absorbing the good stuff and not the bad! lol

All soaps sold on the market today contain harmful chemicals and I've stopped using all of them.  The only "pure" soap is plain old Borax.  I make a liquid soap out of it and use it in the shower as well as washing my hands, etc...  It has natural antibacterial qualities and it leaves my skin feeling nice and soft.  As a hand sanitizer, I use plain old grain alcohol (eg..Everclear or any brand of vodka) in a 50% solution mixed with water.  I'm not fanatical about it as I believe a little bacteria helps to strengthen our immune systems.  When I was a kid, we played in the dirt and there was no antibacterial soap back then, and amazingly, we survived.  Go figure!
