Do Women Really Understand HPV?

No surprise, a survey of some 3,000 American women (ages 18-75) administered by the National Cancer Institute found only 40 percent had ever heard of human papillomavirus virus (HPV), the most common form of sexually transmitted disease.

What's more, less than 50 percent knew of HPV's connection to cervical cancer, although two-thirds knew it could be transmitted sexually and 79 percent understood it could cause abnormal Pap smears.

Even another survey of some 650 adults (nearly half were women) confirmed the previous numbers about the lack of knowledge about HPV. One interesting tidbit: A woman's desire to be vaccinated for HPV vacillate, depending on her association with cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. As women link the two, the less likely they will opt for the HPV vaccine.

Makes you wonder if the women surveyed would further balk if they really understood the cost for the HPV vaccine Gardasil -- more than $350 for a a three-dose regimen over six months -- or realized it's produced by the very same company (Merck) that makes drugs that kill their bones.

Fact is, cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent avoidable without relying on a vaccine.

Instead of coming out too soon with a risky vaccine, I wish the researchers would concentrate on finding a way to diagnose a MAN with the strains of HPV which cause cervical cancer. I have read that here is currently no way for a man to know if he is carrying the strain of HPV which can lead to cervical cancer if passed to a woman. The strain of HPV which causes visual warts on the genitals is actually NOT the same strain which causes cervical cancer! So a man who is sexually active could be spreading cancer-causing HPV to all his partners and never even know. Scary. One more reason I have always been an abstinence advocate with my children. It can literally save their lives, if they only listen. And I agree with the poster who said we must set the bar high for our children. You warn them strongly against cigarette smoking and drug abuse, right? The same should go for sexual activity, which causes incurable disease for over 25% of the population.

yea WHAT THE HECK?!  what about MEN!!! I'm tired of all these sexual medical issue falling on the heads of women, WHY? because we suffer the most of the horrendous symptoms, but a LOT of mean in their moment of heat/hardness could give a rats *** about what they are carrying and causing - "Im sorry, the blood left my head therefore I have no control" is the most common and sad excuse for the mass un protected sex community moments, not to mention ALCOHOL which has to be the number 1 contributor to STD' ridden and pregnancy outcomed sexual activity. I am in COLLEGE I know of this crap personally and I'm tired of the girls being the only one's that seem to be concerned, now hearing of a girl in my class FORCED by her father to get this dumb untested vaccine, as all of these MEN all for putting that untested crap in our children, but yet they have not thought once about how they could be the one's spreading it. just sickening . . . come on guys . . . I know at least one of you on this site has something to say - _____insert reply here______

[:P] I understand the advisories against vaccines that contain mercury. Are you saying that this is not a viable option? Behavior modification when it comes to teens will not work. I want to protect my daughter before sex.

Don't write teens off too quickly! The statistics tell that where teens are taught (in school or at home) to avoid sexual activity the sexual activity rate drops! They also don't know that 54% of high school students are virgins (www.missthemess.com/statistics/abstinence.php). It takes the pressure of to know you're not the only one. :D What most people don't understand is that HPV is NOT blocked by a condom. It can be transmitted simply by touching! The only sexually transmitted disease that is prevented by a good, working, properly-used condom, is AIDS. Our kids usually aren't told that condoms fail 30-50% of the time (that's not a risk anyone should take with AIDS!) All the other STDs: Herpes, Syphillis, Clymidia can be transmitted with simple contact like touching. And there are lots of STDs out there. Pathology in one Cal. county said 5 of 8 girls in the local college had at least one STD! Don't hesitate to educate your teen, it works. Have them think of 8 people they are attracted to. Now have them consider 5 of them carrying a disease-maybe fatal-but you don't know who. Now ask your teen: Do You want to take the risk of being infected? It is like playing Russian Roulette. Just knowing that there are many LIFE threatening diseases out there is enough to sober a young person into considering their actions. It is a parent's job to help them thoughtfully consider their life choices, and this is an importnat one. Educate yourself first. HPV can lie dormaant in the body for up to 20 years before it becomes cancer. A person can be passing it around and not even know they have it! Dr. C. Everet Koop, Surgeon General, spoke the clear truth in a national address about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. He said there is one way to remain uninfected: Have One, Mutually Faithful, Uninfected, Parther - For Life. (period) It is a simple goal. Teach it to your teen to wait. Set the goals high - just as you would with other life goals. Even if your kids don't completely hit the mark, they will have aimed higher than if they weren't given any goal at all. Plus, there are no side-affects to abstinence. :)

Please
Do not fall victim to the hysteria that is being promoted by the makers of the vaccine.
The truth about HPV http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/janak/071212
and the truth about a vaccine that has ill side effects already seen and who knows the long term effects
should really be thought through rationally.
Respectfully yours
